Bawla Murder Case

Mumtaz Begum and H.H. Maharaja Tukojirao III Holkar of Indore.

Mumtaz Begum, a muslim dancing girl who was in the Zanana of the Maharaja of Indore, fled the Indore Zanana quarters and reached the Mumbai, where she found a lover, Abdul Kadar Bawla. She started living with him but on the 12th January 1925, she and  her lover were attacked by the gang of 9 to 10 assailants, who tried to kidnap her. Unfortunately, her lover resisted and was shot dead by one of the assailants. 3 British military officers who were passing by heard the commotion and caught 2 of the assailants and handling them over to the police. After the detail interrogation, it was found that all the members of the team were employed by the Indore Darbar secret police. After the brief court hearing, 3 of the accused were sentenced to death (one of them gone mad after the verdict and hence sentenced to life) 3 accused were sentenced to life and one accused was acquitted. In the inquiry it was found that, Maharaja of Indore had some role in it and with this evidence, was given the choice of either abdicate the throne or face the court trial. H.H. preferred the first, and abdicate the throne in the favor of his son.
